El Gage with the picture in which his fish looked almost as large as he though it should. Just walk out to the beach and cast a couple of times, it's that easy. For him, maybe. This ten pound striper opened up the split ring on his Laser Green Shiner SP Minnow so after it he had to resort to throwing a Lucky Craft Surf Pointer and catching a few surfperch. I arrived soon after the striper got beached and was rewarded with  nothing. That's not completely true. I did get to hear the tale of the striper several times. Several. "There I was..."
I did receive a text about a sixteen pound salmon caught in 180 feet of water off of Elephant today. Ed Parsons caught it. It took all day. It ain't quite wide open. But if you're gonna go, that 160 to 200 feet of water from Bodega Head to Elephant (or maybe even a bit further South) is probably the best bet. You probably won't limit but you'll burn less fuel than running out to 300 feet. I have discovered that skunking close to home is preferable to skunking far away. Barely. It hurts a tiny bit less.

Nice video Sucka-Fish!!!
Couple things thou, swing your downrigger out of the way or parallel with the boat, makes netting easier as well eliminating chances of tangle’s...

Also learn your fish better, you should never net a salmon if you do not know what the species is...
Salmon are very fragile and if you have had netted a silver or a shortie and did that to him, just to identity the fish... Once you let it go it very well will die shortly after. They get stressed as well beating them up on the boat floor does not help.
Catching a fish and bringing it to the boat is one thing that stresses a fish out, netting and bringing it on board is a death sentence.
So in the future study your salmon species better and you can tell from the water what type it is. This is also why you use barbless hooks so you can easily let the fish go at the side of the boat if it’s a shortie or silver.
Good luck in the future.
Hope other anglers out there read this and if they aren’t already aware of this, hopefully they will be educated.

Very well and politely said info from experience. It's never to early to teach or to late learn.

space invader thanks for watching. Stumbling on words. I know how to identify a salmon in the water. I was showing my audience the black gums and spotted tail but the head cam was frozen. Nothing wrong with double checking the moment you get it on board. If I dont show I am checking then someone will blast me for not checking. I made a "how to salmon fish for dummies" video. In that video I show how to release a shaker outside the boat, and tell people not to net undersize. I tell people if you net a salmon and its of legal size never let it go, its bad ethics, it will most likely die. I also explain the difference between a silver/king. You will see countless halibut I catch near legal size that I never net. Happy we are having this conversation early in the season. Good Luck out there

Sucka-Fish...
No worries and I’m glad you have the informational videos down.
I have watched a couple of your other vids and love them.
I wasn’t trying to sound arrogant, if I came off that way. Your doing a great job and obviously catching!!!
Definitely the more information people can read and watch about proper fishing methods will help others be mindful fishermen and women!
Glad you mentioned not netting under sized halibuts as well so they don’t get split tails .
I know this blog has had some information on both salmon and halibuts over the years but like you said now Is a great time to get the conversations going as the season is upon us.
Anyways hope all is well and be safe everyone!
