Mitch Hamilton sent in this picture with the note, "Managed to scrape up 16 out of the bay today, spotted a whale south of hog island as well. Good day with the kids and grandkids " You were definitely doing some serious scraping to catch 16 Dungeness inside the bay, Mitch. Others are catching too, but not too many. There were a few snare fisherpersons claiming four to six Dungeness from the shore this week, but my impression is that most shore crabbers were doing well to get a couple of legal reds. The successful ones I spoke to liked squid for bait, even though we seem to be selling a lot of anchovies to the snarers. Maybe a smorgasborg is in order. Outside the bay has been marginally better but there's still a lot more bad spots than good ones. When in doubt, go deeper. And north. There have been a few nice batches of crab caught off of the Towers on Ten Mile but there's also been empty pots. Again, deeper was better, but avoid 140 to 170 feet of water there as that's better rockfishing than Dungeness crabbing. It's also one of my favorite rockfish spots, so don't fish there, either. Of course, I kid, sort of. The rockfishing has been mostly slow since the big swells rolled through, but a few guys have done well at it, so my guess is the fish are scattered in shallower and hopefully more bitey out deeper where the swells wouldn't reach them.
The slowish Dungeness crabbing should continue for a few more weeks as the commercial season has been delayed for whales yet again. They might get to open in mid-December, depending on the whales. Whales in Tomales Bay and pelicans still flying around probably don't bode well for the commercials. Well, next year we get to feel their pain.

Why do we feel the pain next year?
Next year we only get to open for Dungeness after the whales leave, just like the commercial fishermen. If the whales stay we don't go crabbing.
That's ok by me ,the whales are awesome creatures everytime I see some up close (like 25'or closer )to my boat it's something really cool and kinda scary at the same time .whales have the right away.
Good morning All, With having read the last two Post's with Mr. Unknown making his comments, it its obvious that he will always be the negative to all of our Positives. If you do not have anything good to say, then please just go away. This post has always been good reads with all of Willy's great ad libs and great advice. It is people like "Unknown" that has kept me off of all other fishing blog posts due to the great braveness of sitting behind a keyboard from "Others". No need to waste my time debating these people. You will never win in their minds. So in short, keep up the great work Willy and all of those at Lawson's Landing.

Do the whales ever leave?
One would think crab snares would be fine with whales around. I wonder if fish and game will allow that next year.
Well said " high times fishing" Mr. Unknown "please just go away"
Fools.
Could there be more than one uknown?
I get so close to a whale while fishing we kiss. Zero distance apart.
Hey anybody have a good way to freeze crab? I have tried a couple of ways in the past, but nothing seems to work. The closest way to okay, wasn't! I've froze it in water, I've wrapped it in plastic wrap then vacuum sealed it. This was using picked crab meat, I've even tried freezing it whole cooked and gutted, and even gutted but not cooked. After being in the freezer for any length of time, and it doesn't taste good. I've pulled my gear 10 times since the opener, my good friend Billy and I have harvested 200 Dungeness crab. I fish out of Bodega Bay, I live 12 miles from the ramp. My pots are in 170' off the Russian River. We call ourselves the"20/20 club" we harvest 20 crab, and then 20 rockfish the key to good crab pulls is fresh hanging bait. Give me a shout-out on channel 9. Going tomorrow. All of my family and friends are eating fresh crab

Can someone recommend a good article about this issue, especially regarding impacts to the recreational fishery next year as Willy noted? Many thanks in advance.
Mr high times fishing, the first comment made by unknown is not who you think it is ,if you would of read the comment you would notice there is nothing negative about it at all .not all "unknowns "are the same , so now who is being negative
Responding to Tailout regarding freezing crab. We clean our crabs, first and foremost, and then cook them whole. Once they are cooled off we eat what we can but what is left, we then place (2) crabs in a gallon freezer zip lock bag, squeezing out the air but leaving just a tad bit of moisture in the bag. We then double bag into a second gallon zip lock bag and squeeze out the air again (i.e., repeat the previous step). NOTE: We do this to help to prevent the claws from poking holes in the bags. We then place usually (2) of the gallon zip lock bags (4 crabs in total) into a grocery sized brown paper bag, roll up nice and tight and place in our deep freezer. We've been able to keep crab frozen for up to 6 months and the meat is fabulous when we thaw them out and crack the shells, pulling out the tender meat for consumption at a later date. We feel keeping the meat in the shell is what saves the meat. We have tried other ways of freezing crab as well but this is the way that works best for us. Hope this helps you out!!! Cheers ...
Fishing talk should be nothing but that, fishing stories, good or bad. We've all had them. We need to just ignore them at all times. They will soon just go away when no one pays attention to them or responds to them. That is the only thing they thrive on is our responses. No response, they go bye bye. Tight Lines!!!
I like to pick all the (cooked) crab meat then vac seal in 1# packs and freeze, seems to last really well.
As long as we keep ignoring the "Unknowns" on this blog, then they do not have an audience. They fish for our responses so just don't take the "bait". I just want to keep reading about both the great days and the bad days for the reports. We learn from both reports. Tight Lines!!!
You can freeze picked meat in milk, then vacuum seal the milk cube. It’ll give you a good 6 months.

Not an article but the proposed regulations and the reasons for them can be found under "Sport/Recreational Fishing" by clicking on Crab.
Try picking it then canning it. Crab cakes all year. I keep it simple. Just like albacore. Salt pepper olive oil.
