So, for the moment at least, you may fish in the ocean. There's pretty much no way to get your boat to the ocean, but should you find yourself there, you may fish. During the nice weather this week there were a few halibut caught. Gage would like you to know that he caught four of them on Thursday. My job, apparently, is to be present and allow Gage to start filling my "boat limit." Oh, and to net. We trolled and had zero bites until the water hit 61º and 13 feet depth. Then we (Gage) caught our fish in about 20 minutes. No big ones but all 23" to 28". This was back by Inverness. There were a couple of others caught (I hear) by Hog Island. There's squid eggs washing up on Dillon Beach which would seem to indicate that a squid spawn happened nearby. The weather is back to "spring-like conditions," which translates to wind. The wind can't last forever and neither can the shelter in place. Both shall pass (probably one long before the other) and when that time comes the wait will have almost been worth it. I'm hoping that wearing a mask will improve my fish catching. It sure makes taking withdrawals at the bank much speedier.

One idea until we can once again hang out on Willy’s front yard is to halibut fish the Berkeley flats. The Berkeley marina launch is open. It’s not nearly as serene and picturesque as Tomales Bay but your likely to find a couple halibut. Also, does anyone know if that small dirt launch ramp across from Marconi Conference Center is open? Not sure who owns this launch or if it’s legal to use, but I have seen trailers parked there on occasion? Just a thought.

Dirt ramp is closed ... all marin access is closed.
Marconi is a shitty spot anyways. Don’t try it.
Lots of obstacles, shallow and lots of submerged old pier pilings, sea grass...and pissed off locals policing the area and I heard of $1000.00 tickets.
As of the latest, rockfish is closed from shore but open to ocean fishing from a boat. California halibut is open as well from a boat.

Thanks Space Invader. No fish is worth getting a ticket for, pissing off the neighbors, or hitting a piling. The old saying goes if it’s sounds too good to be true, it’s to good to be true! Willy, what would you guess is a date you will be safe to open back up to the public?

Best to not post about little, local known launching spots. that place cant hold many trailors and now someone is going to come from Sacramento to launch there and get stuck and block for several hours. And yeah there are still several launches open in the bay. I am on the water typing this. one 27" hali drifting live smelt in 3.5 hours.

Enjoy it.

I feel safe now. We can regulate numbers and eject anyone not following the social distancing rules. Just waiting for the county to agree with us. Until then, it looks like unemployment, fishing and skeet shooting from my front yard. It seems like it should be more fun....
If I had to guess? Mid-June. Perhaps earlier for day visits.

more evidence showing virus does not spread well outdoors, its spring folks got to get outside and would think outdoor camping type site like Lawson's would be safest option out there. In contrast to hotels, motels and vacation rentals, folks are actually living and camping in their own mobile home campers or tents and can step outside into open spaces where easier to maintain required social distancing, not that I am expecting logic to prevail...

If I can come and shoot some skeet with you I'll provide the clays, shells, and sandwiches.

Talked to a Marin Sheriff deputy today and asked specifically about launching at the small dirt area near Marconi. He knew the spot and said they WILL ticket there, even without no-parking signs. He said basically that driving to any recreational activity in Marin is grounds for a citation.
I suppose you could argue your ticket in court on the grounds that you're getting food and not recreating, but I doubt the judges these days are feeling very lenient.
Hopefully the lockdown will ease enough for them to open all the real ramps soon! Apparently Napa is starting to open up and Marin is watching closely....
