The last time Gage tried for sand dabs he caught two. This time he took his buddy Danny for luck. It didn't work. Danny caught both fish as a double and that was it. The only reason Gage got to hold a fish for the picture is that Danny wisely didn't want to touch the slime eel. I don't blame him. They have next level mucus. Not Gage and Danny, the eels. Probably.
Miller Park has been closed for boom retrieval but should be open by this weekend. There could be another closure if the American Challenger releases a hidden stash of oil or if there's an attempted recovery from the rocks. A recovery takes money that nobody is yet willing to fork out, so probably the launch will stay open.
In case you don't read the comments on here, (Why wouldn't you read the comments? These guys are more knowledgeable than me. Mostly.) here's Tracy's comment from a couple of days ago. If you like crabbing you should probably pay attention.
"The California Fish and Game Commission sent out a 15-day notice which expires on March 22nd to provide the ‘limited’ opportunity for public comment on the proposed regulations concerning the recreational crab fishery. The information is included in PDF form at this link. https://fgc.ca.gov/Regulations/2020-New-and-Proposed You may have to copy and paste the link. (Look about a third way down the PDF page regarding crabbing)

Comments on the revisions to the proposed regulatory language and/or the revised economic impact analysis must be emailed to fgc@fgc.ca.gov or mailed to Melissa Miller-Henson, Executive Director, California Fish and Game Commission, P.O. Box 944209, Sacramento, California, 94244-2090, from March 5-March 22, 2021.

Hope you find this helpful. It’s important that we all have a voice!"

Thank you Tracy.

The Recreational Red Abalone Fishery to Remain Closed Until 2026

Ouch

I feel the pain for Ab divers, don't dive myself but that is a lengthy period of time taken from their recreational sport:(

I don't expect the abalone to ever come back, not in my life time.

I wonder if we will lose our taste for abalone, not to mention too old to crawl over those slippery rocks and dive in that frigid, shark infested water...
Not likely!

Let's hope that the Urchins get under control and the kelp beds come back. Until then, it could be one long wait.

I fear you are right Capn Al.

Last year while diving for recreation, not to harvest anything, I saw hundreds of abalone. Stillwater Cove area. I'll be 56 if it re opens in 2026. I hope I'm still in good enough shape. If it happens that is.

Why is it that whenever someone in the "Department" gathers together, they figure out another tax or fee? Now they want to tax your traps.

Trap Validation Program: Proposed subsections 29.85(b) and 701(h), Title 14, CCR, would
establish a “Recreational Crab Trap Validation” program that would require those individuals
who fish for crabs with recreational crab traps to purchase an annual validation. A small fee of $2.25 would be required for each validation.

And the money collected will be used for what, and by who?

As if or boat launch fee ,fishing license, boat registration, and fishing gear being taxed isn't enough!

Starting to feel like a victim to society (FLM) fishermen lives matter too !!! Lol

sorry but I'm a little unclear regarding the "Trap Validation Fee". Is the fee per trap or fisherman? If both why not do a 3 way and charge a boat fee also.

The money collected will be sacrificed to the pension tsunami.

it costs the state more money to implement fees like that than they take in which in turn gives them justification to raise the fee.
And I still haven’t figured out how to crab fish with out some kind of rope or line attached to the pot or snare. So we have that to look forward to as well.

Hi Willy. This time of year (that is, starting Thursday), do you recommend deeper or shallower for rockfish?

Poaching a limit it is and has been for a long time. It's who you are and who you know that makes that yummy dinner hit the plate. Believe it because it's true.
