These guys got the halibut dialed in this week. Their largest weighed 15 pounds. Catching live bait was problematic for a lot of the fishermen the last few days but luckily the halibut decided to eat the dead frozen stuff. There have been a few stripers in the mix as well with at least four 11 to 18 pound fish caught today.
Somehow Gage manages to get his hand in the photo. These fish fell to trolled hootchies in 8 to 25 feet of water. It takes a dedicated crew to run the gear, making near-constant depth changes and cleaning off seaweed. My crew was good for about five hours before they mutinied. The fish weighed 8 to 12 pounds.

I'm sure Gage is practicing on those "chickens" hoping to maybe get a harpooned 80 lber or better yet a 100+ lb "shooter" in AK. When you hear those .410's going off on the "butt" grounds in AK you know there's a good bite on. When do you head to AK? Limit for sockeye's on the Russian just raised from 3/6 to 9/18 possession. Super run!
when drifting with live bait in tbay do the halibut prefer anchovies over smelt or is every day different?
They seem to prefer the anchovies if you can find them, they also gobble up smelt and shiners just fine.

Sometimes they even prefer the dead stuff. Not usually, but there are very few absolutes in fishing. One in vodka, though.
cool thanks. the two times i found anchovies i caught halibut, the two times i only found smelt no halibut. small sample so was curious how it is for others. In SF bay smelt are even money or even better sometimes.
