Dungeness season must be close because the bar is breaking pretty steady. Earlier today it was an intermittent break on the incoming tide, letting a few boats out to try for rockfish. One of these boats out of Miller Park limited out on rockfish in 100 feet of water about a mile or so south of Tomales Point. On the way back in, sometime after 11:00, the boat was either overtaken by a wave or overtook a wave (reports vary) on the bar at the mouth of the bay and was rolled over (reports agree). Steve Werlin, known on here at times as the Dark Lord, happened to be watching from his house on the hill in Dillon Beach. He called Gage first while somebody else called 911. Gage was, at that time, in Half Moon Bay looking at big pumpkins. He called Cameron. Cameron grabbed me. Cameron jumped in the tractor headed for the boat lot. We tried John Brezina's Whaler because he doesn't have a bow rail (easier to load people from the water) but no keys, so.... Shrimp Boat to the rescue! Thanks, Alec. It's amazing how fast you can drive a boat over sloppy water when 1.) someone is in danger, and 2.) it's not your boat. The bar laid down the whole time we approached and as we got closer you could see people huddled together in the water. Then a wave started to build in front of us about head high and started feathering in the east breeze. We hit it just right and caught a bit of air before gently landed. Alec has a lot of crap in that boat but it apparently balances it out properly for gentle landings. Thanks, Alec, and I hope I didn't lose too much of your special ballast over the side on the run out. Then we were at the swimmers.
First thing, one of them was a maybe 5 or 6 year old girl. Before you get all, "How dare they take a little kid on the ocean!", how do you think Cameron and Gage got so comfortable on the big pond? You gotta start sometime, and a good way to get your kids used to being on the water and not getting seasick is just by doing it. So, make your comments, and I'll let 'em post, but I stand with the dad. In this case, the boat flipped and the child was trapped under the boat. When dad figured this out he started diving under the boat in a frenzy to get his child out. As you would. Well, as I hope I would. Diving under a flipped boat with God knows what hanging under with possible fish hooks, ropes, whatever to tangle up or get trapped in without a wetsuit or fins or mask..... I want to believe that I would do it too, and I think I want to think I would, but Goddamn..... But he got her out. And when we got there he was so spent he couldn't even speak. We grabbed the kid, because she was easy and light and if a wave comes and I gotta leave, well, I ain't leaving a kid. Then Cameron blew his back out trying to get the dad on board. But between him pulling and the other guy in the water pushing, they got him in. I was leaning like a sailboater trying to balance the boat and watching for waves. The other fellow scrambled in (former surfer and accustomed to cold water. I may have to start trying that cold water immersion thing) and said two more were on the boat but they were swept in towards the bay. We ran in across the bar (mostly) and saw two people on the beach in the first cove behind Red Rock. Three coves over was a sandy beach that we could pick them up from, but it would take them some time to get there and the dad was non-verbal. I was thinking that if they could swim in there they probably weren't in as bad of shape as the dad. Making up my mind, over the Point came Henry One, the Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter, with a badass on a fixed rope dangling underneath. That being more badasses than we had, I figured they had it, and we hauled ass back to Lawson's where the Marin County Fire Department had arrived and were deploying. They grabbed our people and started actually saving lives. They had them wrapped up quick. The other two were picked up by Henry One and dropped off here. Hopefully everyone ends up okay. The boat will likely be up on the rocks north of Dillon Beach tomorrow. I hope everyone involved ends up okay. Dad and his daughter weren't awesome when they left but they were in good hands and heading towards even better ones, so there's that. The big takeaway is, the rockcod are biting. This is a fishing report, after all.
For the record, we aren't lifeguards or rescue guys. We just heard that there was a problem and responded. It's what you do. Don't count on us or anyone to save you. I ain't going if it's really bad. And mostly nobody tells me if there's a problem. So be safe.

I'd just like to say that the stuff in my boat wasn't crap, it was there to prepare you for the adversity that lay ahead. Once you figure out how to start my boat and move all the crap around you're ready for anything. And good lord what a frickin nice job you guys did today. I'm so glad my boat could have helped. And this gets my vote for one of the greatest writeups on this blog of all time. And there be been many great great writeups. Nice effin job all around.
Thank You for what you do!
I'm sorry, but it felt like crap when it bounced off me. My apologies.
Heroes in my book
Heroes
Steve Werlin called me this morning said” boat overturned on the bar,I’m on with coast guard what do see.I grabbed my binoculars and said ,small boat overturned and at least 3 in the water.” Shortly thereafter HENERY 1 was visible and in bound. A small boat was outbound from the bay and at full throttle. It hit a roller and was 10’ in the air( crap flying everywhere, not the crews crap just crap.) The small boat rescued the people in the water as Henery 1 monitored and lifted those on shore. Later I learned Willy and his son Cameron were on the small boat. If I ever go over again( it’s been a long time). When I open my salt water filled eyes I want to see Willy and his boys saving my bacon. Job well done guys!,
May skip coffee this morning due to the vicarious adrenaline rush from your account.
Thankful you are all alive!
Having been ex Navy and had to watch my friend Robert Gillespi go under before we could rescue him with the motor whale boat in 5000' deep water, reading this story touches my heart. My Dixie Cup goes off in salute to the two of you for having risked your own lives in rescuing these people. Let's pray that they pull thru and are reunited with their loved ones. Old King Neptune will just have to wait for another time. You guys are Angels!!
Good morning I woke up and first thing went to this page. Am so happy everyone is ok. Me and my buddy were fishing by mouth. Looked a lil to much out there so we decided to stay in we watched the rescue and we prayed every one would be ok and thank you lord for hearing our prayers. On another note. Great day fishing got limits. Decent fish 32 a 30 and 26and 28 nice October fish Thanks aggressive hooker for taking me out
Damn great job y’all. Cheers
Wow, great job and great write up! You guys are hero’s indeed, as are the Henry One guys. Without your fast actions I think the story would have had a different and likely tragic outcome. As someone who crosses the bar regularly and who’s been over it when I shouldn’t have, a sincere thank you!
Good work guys. Proud to call you my friend
Story could have been a lot worse. Thanks to some very brave men families are having dinner instead of funerals. The mouth of Tomales Bay is unforgiving at times. In fact a lot of times. Stay safe, remove all doubt.
Great Hero Shi+ ! You’re both badass! 🙏🏽 for all to be well.
Im in Port Orford and heard about this news this morning, first of all Willy n Cameron you are American bad asses! Glad you were able to help and assist! Funny to hear that Shrimp boat hasnt changed its rescue status and is always loaded with crap...lol...sorry Alec its been that way for years now...lol...i think i still have some gear in there, somewhere im sure😁....again excellent work from the Vogler men, not the first time and sadly, probably not the last🙏
There's an old fashioned word that sums you guys up: Valor.
Having been nearly swamped/capsized myself several times on that bar (saved due to an excellent hole shot full throttle slam on my boat) I hate hearing about these accidents, but love hearing when there is a positive (nobody died) result such as this one. While Lawsons staff might not be a dedicated search and rescue, mariners are mariners and help whenever possible another in distress. It's simply chance that there was ready help available, and that in this case two capable people responded. Well, well done.
Willy & Cam, total and complete Hero's in my book. 💞
Great work men! How true seaman operate right there, no thinking- all action!
I’m sending this blog to the New York Times because it’s such a great story. It should be shared. Cameron is the silent “Badass type” and you Willy are why your boys are like that. Gage wouldn’t have missed that ride if he was there. You are not just nice people you are now heroes. Willy, you are a great writer too. I have to say “Thank You” for being the dad and neighbor one could only hope for.
Willie, I'm not expecting you guys to save me if I make a mistake on the bar, but I do believe the bay is a better and safer place with you & sons on it. If not for your impromptu rescue chops, then for simply reminding us every year that the bay mouth is a place to be earnestly respected and, to a healthy degree, (mostly based on length, beam, and engine size) feared.
That said, to all who read this, think critically about being a good samaritan unless you are a truly skilled and safe mariner first. Dunning-Kruger Effect is sadly alive and well on the water and well intentioned boaters who get over their head trying to help a fellow boater can easily add to the fracas and become immortalized as "second vessel in distress" in any ensuing reports. And nobody wants that. There's no shame in being the guy who got on the radio and alerted the rescuers from a safe location. Cheers to everyone who had a part in saving those boaters.
Good job,
Great report!
Willy! You saved my brother and niece and I want to thank you. If you hadn’t pulled them out of the water when you did, my brother probably wouldn’t have made it much longer. My niece is 100%. She got released same day. My brother will be fine I’m sure but he’s still in the hospital. Thank you thank you thank you!
Willie with out too and Cameron and Gage. Lawsons would never be the same. Thanks for sharing all you knowledge. And being there inI times. May all the people in that origination
As a former Navy Rescue Swimmer I would like to take this opportunity to say, Bravo Zulu ("Well Done") to you and Cameron for an outstanding job on the water. As you mentioned, it's what you do. My dad told several stories of he and his brothers (Neal, Kent and Gibbs) going out when occasion required it in the 1940's and 50's and saving lives when the need was great. It's what inspired me to sign up for the Navy and jump out of helicopters for 17 years. As noted in an earlier comment, while it's better to be trained and equipped for the job, sometimes you just gotta go. Thanks for being there and showing up to help. This world needs more people who are willing to step up instead of just standing there taking pictures on their cell phones.
Amazing rescue and survival story! It’s not the first and it most likely won’t be the last. We appreciate you more than you know!🤙
Just right place, right time, and lucky.
There was a little thinking...
Cameron and I are glad we could help.
Those old guys were all badasses. I could feel them watching (and judging). I hope they approved.
