You really never know what you'll catch when you're rockfishing. This halibut, caught by Kris Gaiero off of Tomales Point, weighed 15 pounds. I would recommend the bay over the reefs at the point for halibut, but, hey, you never know.
Dmitry Varakuta sent in this photo from last year with just about the prettiest salmon I've seen. It's not quite a lit up dorado, but it'll do. The couple of boats that went out looking for salmon today have returned with nothing but a few shorties hooked and released. Reports from south of us are that they're tearing 'em up down there. Our time will come, and when it does, the fish will be larger (and the minimum size will be smaller).
There's still a pretty good number of Dungeness crab out there. I actually had a live keeper get washed up on the beach at my feet while fishing for stripers in the surf yesterday evening. I'm not sure if that means there's a bunch of crab right off of the beach, but there's at least one. It looks like the sand crabs are molting, judging the number of shells on the beach, but if they are the stripers don't know about it.

was on new sea angler today. 32 keeper salmon with several shakers.
Do you know where they caught those salmon?
Way to go Kris! Nice fish! I also will say stripers are about, seen a huge boil just out if reach of any lure I had bring, and that boil at least 50 yards by 50 yards of striper hitting surface bait just too far out to cast to, should be awesome as the next few weeks pass
Also would like to add seeing the first pelicans come into the bayand seen sardines!
5 to 6 miles out (captain said 250') between bodega head and bird rock. Most fish were caught on about 100 pulls so pretty deep
Any studies and if not whats the opinion on halibut meat from Tomales Bay vs San Francisco Bay? I imagine less mercury in the Tomales bay ones?
They are chock full of mercury and other toxins, you all should practice strict catch and release and leave the eating for me, I've had my kids.
So how's the repairs on the dock going? Are you waiting for it to fall over? If so too bad...one less aspect of life there.
No repairs to make. Since the county red-tagged it, it now needs to be replaced with a structure built to current code. That requires a permit that the county has told us they will not grant until we satisfy the requirements of our Coastal Permit, which includes, but is not limited to, a $3,000,000+ wastewater system. We need to pour money down that hole first.
Most fishers seem to be on the water. Any fishers from the surf? Any news about surf perch or bass being caught from the surf?
Gage caught some surfperch yesterday evening. Didn't hear how many. The ospreys are eating a steady diet of redtails, so it looks like there's quite a few out there. I tried for stripers three nights in a row and had one fish hooked for maybe a second (probably a snagged perch, but a man can dream).
Thanks Willy! Haven't heard much from Gage lately.
Are stripers caught at Doran Beach as frequently as they are at Dillon/Lawson's?
