Here's the salmon report from the guys that were catching :"12 salmon total, all over 20 (23-25in) biggest about 8lbs Still allot of fun even though they were not monsters hit 3 within an hour then played catch and release until around 3pm before we got hungry and reeled in the last one and called it. elephant rock to the key holes 70' of water at 40 pulls" The salmon are biting again today, same size as yesterday but a little bit shallower water. By noon we already had two boats return with their limits. Still waiting to see a flatfish.

Can you tell me if the red tail perch are still in the area

Good job on the limits -- but eight 20+ inchers let go? Come on, people. Catch and release kills. For ocean salmon, especially. Those fish are fragile. Any experienced salmon angler knows it. Keep your keepers and go home.

It's also not condoned by DFW from what I've been told. I agree, keep your limit no matter what size and leave the rest to hopefully grow

Personally I wouldn't get my picture taken in front of those drinks. I'm sure their freezers are full to, but go ahead and proudly wear a shirt with the flag

Great to see them still pulling in the pink meat.

Make sure everyone votes No on Prop. 3! Fish need water!

Classy response, thank you.

As for the redtails, Gage says yes. He hasn't caught any keepers lately, though.

sheeeeeeesh... talk about a roast!

We live and hopefully, we learn. I'm sure none of these guys ever made any mistakes, just ask them!

I made a mistake once; I thought I was wrong, but then it turned out I was right.

Did you say steak? Not hating on the catch just hoping to impart some knowledge.

Nobody's getting roasted. We've simply opened a venue for an important topic. I have never released a legal-sized Chinook salmon (I've only caught them in season) on the ocean. The impacts to the fish are so obvious (think how many are leaking blood when they reach the surface), so even a 20 incher on the nose comes into the kayak and gets bonked. I also don't net fish that could be undersized. The DFW has, at times, even required that anglers keep the first two salmon they catch, regardless of size, to reduce mortality. I believe the department should prohibit releasing a salmon that one knows to be a keeper. (That would encourage unhooking dinks in the water without netting and measuring.)

The comments are all good but commercial salmon anglers have a 26” minimum legal size and I know they sort through a bunch of undersized fish... they release a lot of fish over a commercial season, that’s if they get one at all.
The impacts are not just sport anglers it’s a lot broader then that.
I do agree that keeping the first two legally sized fish is the best practice, even if they are 20” dink’s...
Salmon swim in schools that usually have the majority of fish around the same size in the whole school... (lots of schooling fish do this)
so if thinking your gunna eventually pull a 20#lb salmon out of a school of 6-7#Lb-ers? That is most likely not going to happen.
You will most likely just continue to catch a bunch of smaller fish. 6-7Lb-ers

If your not happy with the size of fish coming in then DO NOT continue to drop back in the same school over and over again...
Be mindful and pull up your gear and go find another school of fish...Hopfully they will be a tad bit bigger.

I have seen a lot of people that net every salmon that they catch that is a big mistake if they are small fish all fish are looked at before they come into my boat and are released in the water if I have to put a tape measure on to see if they're legal pulling up smaller fish by the the leader to get a better look at him without taking him all the way out of the water is how you make the determination never put the fish in the net or on the deck to find out if it's legal if there's any question the hook it in the water

Deplorable1 said...

Unhook it in the water instead of putting it in the boat and I think this is a good topic to talk about and I've learned a lot on this blog thank you to everybody who has weighed in and commented on this
