California Recreational Abalone Fishery to be Closed in 2018
|
The California Fish and Game Commission yesterday voted to close the 2018 northern California recreational abalone fishery due to ongoing environmental conditions that have significantly impacted the abalone resource. The closure affects next year's recreational abalone season, which was scheduled to open on April 1, 2018.
The Commission's 4-0 decision (Commissioner Jacque Hostler-Carmesin was absent) upholds the policies of the Abalone Recovery and Management Plan, which was adopted by the Commission in December 2005. Over the past several years, the Commission has taken several actions to reduce take and shorten the season to protect abalone from the unprecedented environmental conditions.
The Commission directed the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to work with stakeholders to deliver a new fishery management plan that includes guidance on navigating these unprecedented conditions. The Commission also directed CDFW to consider how the new fishery management plan can inform the potential re-opening of some fishing opportunity for the 2019 season.

Oregon 1 per day 5 per year gonna make the trip this year. At least a meal or 2.
Poaching is the number one threat to our Abalone resource and none of these new actions addresses any of that fish and game needs to get off their lazy asses and get out there at night and find the poaching rings

I don't really think it is laziness of the F and G, I have complete respect for any authority that has to deal with the public on a daily basis. I do think if they would just enforce the max penalties, confiscate boats, vehicles, and lifetime ban of fishing and hunting licenses people may stop breaking the laws. We must also police ourselves and fishing partners and report any suspicious activities we see.
Amen lock them up and throw away the key. Fishing and diving are my family traditions this feels worse than cancelling christmas or 4th of july. Somebody tell trump we need a wall along our coast

How about the googones that had 2 be rescued sunday. They flipped their canoe off the head. We were suprised to see the stiff south wind. Anyway 22 crab in 5 pots on a 3 day soak. Rebaited and got 8 more to make our limits on a 4 hour soak
Yeah it was a little windy out front yesterday but the further north we ran the better the weather got. Ran to Salt Point for 3 limits of lings and an assortment of rockfish. 21 crab in 8 pots on a 24hr soak. Didn't hear about the canoe but it doesn't surprise me.
kinda sad after 45 years for me,i would be shocked if I ever get to pop another one!bring on the wall!
We need to get some of the dive companies to sponsor an urchin derby. Just like they used to have when they did the chocolate abalone dive in Monterey until some enviro nazi complained cause 2 chocolate abalone weren't recovered and thus plastic was left in the water. That used to be so much fun. Diving the same beach as 500 other divers was pretty crazy!
Roke fin they are lazy... they find it easier to sit at a boat ramp and write tickets for technicalities or set up roadblocks on Highway 20 writing imtickets for people transporting Abalone outside of the shell that is not the problem the problem is organized crime gangs from San Francisco because abalone
Is bringing $200 to $500 a piece... they don't have fishing licenses they don't care about what you confiscate they'll just buy more in the morning they are criminals and they are going out at night and they are stealing Abalone from the ocean and selling them to restaurants in the Bay Area and fish and game is not going to find those criminals at the boat ramp or on Highway 20
