Does anybody know what these are? And why I'm so excited? Maybe the gray ghosts will be back in numbers this year. I got one report today from a boat crabbing in the outer bay that claimed lots of crab, few of them being keepers, and 54º water with brown patches and bait balls. These are the kinds of things that could lead someone to believe that there are salmon in close. That someone would probably be wrong, but still...
What is here now are the surfperch. The reports from today sounded pretty good so far with perch up to 12" coming in. Dungeness from the pier is still an option but it's not hot.
Also, Fish and Wildlife will be changing the rules on abalone again and would like your input on their plans. Here's their press release:"The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has extended the deadline to participate in an online public survey about recreational fishing for red abalone. To allow for greater participation, the survey will be open through April 30.
The 20-question survey will help marine biologists gather public input to assist in the development of a red abalone fishery management plan. The plan will incorporate and expand current management practices for the northern California red abalone sport fishery as outlined in the Abalone Recovery and Management Plan, as well as meet requirements for fisheries management in the Marine Life Management Act."

I see eel grass on those squid eggs, did they come from inside the bay?
It's surf grass, like on top of the rocks when you're abbing. These eggs were laid in the outer bay in the shallows, probably. Definitely in the ocean, though, as the big swell ripped them off of their attachments.
Lots of short WSB in sf bay this weekend
That picture explains everything, the last of ab fish's grey matter washed ashore in a ball of eel grass.
C'mon anonymous, be Christian to him.
And they say i am an idiot. Why do i get posts deleted and this guy gets to always run his mouth. At least i put a couple in the box this month!
You're doing better ab fish. Ignore the pot stirrers. Good job on the fish. Hopefully all those short wsb grow up and stick around
Thanks, too bad its gonna blow, sea strangler got 10 to 22. Our fish show up and they close down for 2 weeks
Love you long time ab fish - thanks for keeping it cool!
Yeah I was hoping to make it out this weekend before it closed but oh well. They'll still be around when it opens back up. Guess I'll hit spb for my last sturgeon run.
If the weather doesn't lay down soon we may have to start picking fights with each other again. Can you say jonesin'?
Upwelling. Lotsa upwelling. Good for the smolts. Keep repeating it to yourselves.
Who thinks it's gonna be possible to get out Saturday??
Heading to the landing for the weekend.
I wouldn't chance the bar, but looks like a good clamming day anyhoo.
Pointbreak ~ Do you really want to put your life in the hands of what someone else thinks???
Look at the reports and make your decision based on what YOU think / your expertise, your boat and your gut feeling. Doesn't look like anyone should be going in and out of Tomales this weekend.

Mr. Sherman you make ab fish sound like a college professor, crawl back in your hole and shut your pie hole.
No kidding, someone's chapped. Douchbag...
I tolja we’d start picking fights with each other if the ocean didn’t lie down, are we not fishermen? Willy, you should’ve taken my cue and ordered up some good weather!
MS I was reading your post and my only thought was you need to go away...you are not needed here - it's that simple.
Sherman, you make the most sense out of anyone I've read here. Sporties are a bunch of clowns. Just to add on, when the sticks are out, commercial fisherman have the right of way on the water....so drag that fish you just hooked out of the tack line. Go drive around in circles somewhere else.
Leave the googones alone they are such nice people. Besides they voted your wonderful elected officials. Anyway made it out sat a few lings, a few cod, and a few crab. Ready to get wet next weekend. Jump in for a few AB!! Heard 1 fish caught maybe just a radio fish we saw nothing but stained green water
Here's hoping the F&G don't open the commercial season at all this year. Maybe then some of you high and mighty commercial boys will have to get a "real job" Oh, how much of a hand out do the Feds give you guys for not fishing? Welfare in a different form. Maybe Trump will put a stop to that give away program, but maybe he doesn't know you guys own the Ocean.
Commercial fishing is a real job. Our job requires about 80-120 hrs a week to prep gear, keep a boat in good order, and actually fish. I've been fishing commercial out of bodega for crab and salmon for nearly 5 years....no government handouts for me yet. Commercial fishermen ARE the public's main point of access to a public resource. Just cuz some sport clown spends 50-100k on their sport boat in no way should earn them more access to that public resource that commercial fisherman work hard to provide for the rest of the public. I started fishing as a sport angler. It didn't take much time for me to figure out why the other commercial fishermen talked crap about sporties after I began commercial fishing.
Really i know its gonna be 90 in Rosa today, but do we have to listen to all this hot air.
I read all the BS on both sides, and it makes me wonder if any of you guys would really assist each other in a real emergency. I have been on the seas over 40 years, mostly on the East coast. I have completed the "great loop" several times, (10,500 miles a trip) and made several crossings to the Bahamas and have assisted 100's of boats. Chatted with many commercial boaters and tug boats on the way.
Maybe it's just everyone blowing off steam, and being that "key board thug" but in reality would guys like AB and MS come to the aid of any boater in trouble. (I would hope) I will come to any boaters, aid not because it's law, because it's the "right" thing to do.
Amen!
Hey Willy, cleanup on aisle 7
Who is entitled to the resources of our ocean... I feel we all are... I have seen commercial fisherman that are stand-up citizens with the safest best gear on the ocean they dont disrespect bycatch or mishandled fish that don't meet the minimum size requirement they don't throw their empty bait boxes across the ocean etc etc... in contrast ive seen commercial fisherman who look like the carnies traveling with the circus or State Fair... on the Sportfishing side when I lived in Albi on 90% of the salmon were taken out of 12 foot valcos with little or no electronics and can still be fished that way today... I have seen guys spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on equipment and gear to try and sportfish bottom line via conservationists protect the resource and help your fellow fisherman this crap Sportfishing commercial fishing who has the right we all do fellas we all have the same right to those fish what you're trying to catch it commercially so you can feed hot dogs to your kids or if your sporty showing off to your neighbor all the toys you can afford
Amen captain Ron.
Sorry, had to remove a few for language. For the record, commercial fishing is a tough job and not one that I could do, so I have a lot of respect for commercial fishermen. That said, FYI, commercial fishing boat engaged in trolling do not have right of way. If you were trawling you would have the right of way. The rules are here: https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=navRulesContent We are all equally responsible to not hit each other.
Thanks for the link willy. That written, commercial trollers are generally not as maneuverable with the way our gear fishes. We also generally run on tack lines at one fathom curve. If you looked at my chart plotter at the end of the day, you would see a bunch of tracks all on top of each other. Many of us fish alone with the boat on auto pilot, because salmon doesn't pay well enough to afford a deckhand. Running our gear is a lot more time consuming than tending a rod and down rigger setup. If the sport anglers think we're out catching all their fish or getting in their way, well......we're not. If anyone thinks commercial fishing is easy....buy a permitted boat so you can eat a little humble pie with your fishing "skills".
Whatever fisherman is hiding under the name Anonymous is dangerous and misguided... leaving the wheel house unattended is dangerous ..what if a ship broke down or a boat or anything in your tackline while you're back there fishing and not paying attention and you run them over and kill someone!!???? and you still have the tone of right away and entitlement to a resource that is there for everyone to take and enjoy in a manner of their choice as long as it conforms to fishing regulations. .. and if you can't afford a second mate on your boat maybe you should rethink what you're fishing for or even your profession... in 2005 commercial salmon fishermen took 6.4 million pounds of salmon five years later that amount dropped to less than 1 million pounds ..it don't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out
Most commercial trollers fish solo captain ding bat.
Anonymous I think you got your captain's license from a cereal box Captain Crunch if you even have one... just cuz most people do something doesn't make it right or legal you need to read your Maritime manual
Who’da thunk a handful of squid eggs would be so provocative?
Dear captain Ron, I've seen the NSA go wake a bunch of mooching boats off the trees just to see if there was any bait around. Apparently he didn't get his license from the same place you did, he's entitled, or he isn't familiar with maritime regs. Everybody seems to think they own the ocean, the boat ramp, or etc. everybody needs to put a check on their own arrogance, including you.
Dear Anonymous whichever one you are.. I am glad you agree with me.
