Officially, the clams are still under a "don't eat" advisory from the Department of Health, but the samples of gaper clams we sent were tested and found to have no detectable PSP in their flesh, so the advisory on clams will likely be rescinded this week. In other news, the Ocean Salmon Information Meeting was in Santa Rosa on March 1. There were not a lot of good things to be said about the salmon situation, especially on the Klamath. Over the next week the Pacific Fishery Management Council will meet in Vancouver and, among other things, will come up with the three regulatory alternatives for ocean salmon fishing. My crappy guess is that there will be a season with some closures and restrictions on the early part of the season to protect the winter run chinook. At best, it doesn't look like it will be a great season but at least it looks like we'll have one. Probably.
Crabbing has been fairly slow in the bay except for some good days on the pier. A few guys have done really well with snares around the pier in the last few weeks, limiting out in a couple of hours. There are more that tried and failed, but the Dungeness are there if you are lucky and skilled.

Clams are always under my personal "don't eat" advisory. I enjoy them once in a while in a good clam chowder at "Spuds" but that's about it.

Willy hopefully we get some sort of salmon season but I think it is obvious we need to help the salmon with limited fishing.....I would be ok with a short season and/or a 1 fish limit over 24 inches. I already am planning on more Hali and rock fishing this coming season, last year was all salmon for me but plan to do my part this year and I will limit my chase for the Kings.

salmon snob :)

I'm with ya on that rokefin. Maybe even a limited take per person for the season.

If the fishing is slow enough it will be self-limiting. I don't recall having to tell myself to stop last year, and if this year is worse......

Ain't that the truth sir

Last year was very good to me with the salmon, once I got going I had a 4 week stretch of catching chrome and no rocks or lings were going to persuade me to chase them....I just happened to be at the right place at the right time - no fishing secrets I just put in time on the water and loaded up with salmon. Maybe it was because "Jake" was slowing down, he got his freezer"s" full of pink filets..

This year will be different as every year is never the same, but as I said I do plan on fishing the rocks/lings the majority of the time.

We may need to police Jake this year;) He is the king killer - I heard fish would just surrender and jump in his boat...

I found that by getting real close close to Jake, occasionally one would bounce off the side of his boat into mine. Ricochet fishing, I call it.

From what I'm hearing, It don't look good. What do you guys think about this idea: The Fish&Game sells Salmon punch cards, the money goes to fish plants. Each fisherperson can harvest 10 Salmon a year (Season) When you box the fish you punch the card, after your 10 you're done for the season. You can kill 1 fish x 10 trips, or you can kill 10 fish in one trip if you're that lucky. Oregon does something like this

Notice how nice it is without that fly in the room!

rokefin said...

I thought the fly might be on vacation....has been much more civil lately.

Punch cards could work and might be the fair way to go next year but I would hate for them to adopt it to an every year deal.

Time to get the boat ready.....the thought of rock fishing at new depths is starting to get the blood flowing.

Looking forward to that extra 60 feet of depth, it's going to open up all kinds of ground. Putting a limit on yearly salmon take might make some folks a little irritated but I agree with it as well. I'm sure they would keep the daily bag limit in place though.

I heard the extra 60 ft is only open to people from the valley

Good old Abby is like a ling cod, flash something shiny in front of him and he comes out tongue-a-waggin’, gills-a-flarin’, and jaws-a-snappin!

The Flys returned somebody swat it

If two rock valley is what you mean then I'm guilty. If a googan is someone with a full time job then I'm guilty but I personally think a googan is the guy that sits back and talks nothing but shit. While I enjoy fishing shallow for rockfish I do plan on dropping deep just for the hell of it. Stay on the wall and eat shit little fly.

I like wildly' new strategy. Just delete every post ab fish makes. Works for me, how about you guys?

All good here.. I don't like to see anybody closed out but 90% of it was trash and hate.

I actually got a few good laughs though.

I think abfish should go to his room for a time out. Delete him! During his time out he can think of ways to get along with others. Thanks Willy for creating this blog it's cool to hear people's story's of boating, and fishing and your reports and insight are great stuff. This guy abfish takes away from all that. If you can block, or delete him from posting here a lot of people will be grateful.

Not only can't I do it, I probably wouldn't. Occasionally AbFish would have some good info. He's got local knowledge and fishing skills. If he could limit the insults, racism and disappointment over thousands of people not dying from a dam failure, he would be the most popular part of this site. But too much of anything is bad for you.
