Finally, a halibut! Vic Shada caught this 21 pounder while he was mooching for salmon off of McClure's. He and his partner also caught three salmon. The only other boat that we launched today caught two limits of salmon on Ten Mile near Abbott's Lagoon and they were back by lunch time.

Hi Willy,

What kind of bait do you use to mooch for salmon? I was thinking of coming down next monday and try for something different then halibut. Like maybe go after a ling or, I would love to catch one of those monster white sea bass. Of course this all depends on how the ocean is, I only have a 14 foot valco. If its to rough on the outside i guess I will just target some halibut down by hog island. Should I troll a mackerel looking rapala to catch a white sea bass?

For salmon, most people drift herring or anchovies. A single barbless circle hook with no offset is legally required to be used. Lings will take the same thing, as will sea bass apparently, as most of the ones caught here were taken while mooching for salmon. To target a sea bass, most people fish squid for bait, either drifted or anchored over a squid spawn zone. Due east of the outer red buoy "02" about two hundred yards or so would be a possible nearby spot to try for them.
