Steve Collins of Sacramento caught this 28 pound pig yesterday. No other fish, but how many slugs like this do you really need? Need? Not that many. Want? Well....Nice fish, Steve, but I feel like it would have looked better in my boat. The way the fishing was for most guys yesterday, one fish was a stretch. There were some caught out of here, with one boat (Robert.....) catching five chunky salmon near the Trees while his buddies watched and steamed. Redemption for the buddies today when Robert couldn't get bit. These fish in the shallows (there aren't many of them) are big but they are also fickle bitches. Even the dudes. Hero to zero in 24 hours. Welcome to my life (slowed down).
Today's heroes are Team Kim. Harry and Eddie are modeling their two salmon to 25 pounds caught today (Peter Kim, brother and boat owner, was not pictured due to boat maintenance. Remember, though, when trolling the only one fishing is the driver of the boat. I've got your back, Peter) There were six or so boats with one salmon and more with none. Most effort was shallow but the deep water guys weren't in here bragging afterwards. The suck was spread all around. As it should be. At least one of these fish was caught in 70 feet of water in front of Bird on a flasher/hootchy combo, the other, larger fish on a rolled anchovy. So, yes, high boat for the day goes to the guys that started really fishing here five years ago. There's few things dedication, time and money can't overcome, eventually.
Speaking of dedication, time and money, Adam Bienenstock caught these three halibut Thursday and today (we won't speak of Friday) near Marshall. Live anchovies caught the pair and a live jacksmelt caught the single. Somebody has been paying attention and doing the things that fish like. Watch this man. Probably fish near him. Gage has been talking to him, and God help him, he's been listening. As for other people fishing for halibut in the bay, catch numbers around Hog have dropped but, as the baitfish enter the bay (as the have) one would expect the catch rate there to increase as fish numbers increase. Of course, the fish don't read this and may not know they're supposed to come in the bay, so... Hit 'em with the positive waves, Moriarty. No more negatives.
Kelly's Hero's one of my favorite movies.
ReplyDelete3 halibut near hog on Saturday all over 30in
ReplyDeleteNo fish for us today. Fished south of hog and went back by Marshall for an hour. Saw some nets swing by hog. Bait is around but was a pain to make this morning.
