So the good news is that Gage caught a halibut yesterday evening back by Inverness in the water I said wasn't salty enough (Turns out, it is salty enough). He was trolling and it bit a green hootchie. Game on.
Here's a better article spelling out the bad news for salmon fishing: https://komonews.com/news/local/2-groups-sue-trump-administration-over-orca-starvation-deaths   Get your salmon this year, because who knows what's coming? The government may find a sensible way to allow salmon fishing in California after the killer whales have returned to Washington, allowing the take of fish that the whales didn't eat. Or, likelier, they'll just close salmon period. No salmon fishing might make it easier to suck more water out of the Delta. And who wants that? Oh yeah, the guys getting sued. I guess the no salmon fishing option is the more sensible option.
   Bummer.

  1. Dam Left Coast sure knows how to screw things up. Why dont the put the Orcas in the farm raised salmon pens to fatten them up. Sure seems like a losing battle if they dont fix the rivers.

  2. Best idea I've heard yet - feed them the farm slop.

  3. What these whalehuggers need to do is focus their support, money and time to saving the food source of these whales. Which happens to be salmon for these southern pod residents.
By putting their $ and media/time and talk into fixing our rivers and spawning grounds for the salmon, that would help the whales and they may have a chance.
By stopping or restricting the commercial and sport salmon fishing to solve the problem the salmon populations have been facing for years now, won’t fix it. It would only temporarily add a little more food for these whales. It will not be enough to save the Salmon. Eventually the salmon numbers will continue to diminish. Without fixing the rivers and “taking out” Cali water greediness, there is nothing to help save the salmon populations. These whalehuggers don’t realize that the family’s and communities and businesses that rely on the salmon industry for a living are the very reason we have the salmon we have currently.
These are the people and are the communities of people that own and operate business and organizations that directly support the recovery of the salmon. The people and communities that are the ones who donate time and money into subsataning the salmon and the people who fight for the salmon and understand the real cause and effects of our salmon situation world wide... By Affecting this community of people who support the Salmon through the commercial and sport fishing industry and lifestyle would only hurt the salmon populations and ultimately the whales they are trying to save.
I guarantee the whales will die first, before all the salmon. I’m afraid to say, that without all of us helping in anyway we can to help fix our rivers and salmon spawning grounds, unfortunately time will have the best of us all.
Take your time pick up some trash, educate people when needed, attend your local meetings, vote for positive change and maybe smoke a little less weed and drink a little less wine because that’s a big part of our salmons watershed problems...
    Just a start.

  4. The whalehuggers do not have enough money behind them to fix the rivers and spawning habitat. The people in the state who control the water DO have enough money to keep things trending in their favor. In order to make those kinds of changes you have to buy politicians and elected officials, and that is expensive. Weed=huge money. Wine=even bigger money. California's legislature loves money only slightly more than advancing their own personal political agenda and lining their pockets, because it takes money to do that.

  5. I object to the term "whalehugger." Such denigrating terminology makes fishermen sound stupid, ignorant, unsympathetic and selfish. None of us want salmon fishing banned, and we agree that river habitat must be addressed, but saying "whalehugger" will not gain us any friends in places where it might matter.

I for one am a fan of whales and porpoises, even ones that eat salmon.

  6. Go write an article in one of your liberal publications that us working men use to start our campfires with.

  9. Build more hatcheries is the answer and have the whalehuggers pay for it. Feed the Killer whales. More Salmon for everyone....Hey, Alastair go hug your whale.

  10. If we gave all the liberal whale huggers a Jack hammer and told them to go demo the hydro electric dams nothing would happen cause they've never worked a hard day in their life just sucking off the system and raise my taxes.

  11. Fix the rivers and they will span but till then I say natural selection, if that pod doesn't want to eat stink flipper or what ever other delicacy that's on the menu well then another pod will take there place and thrive on whats available.
Orcas are eating Narwhals these days and people aren't to happy about that. Natural selection.

  12. If the vast majority of salmon are hatchery fish, and hatcheries are funded through fishing, does no fishing mean less salmon for the whales?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Let's hope and pray the orcas develop an insatiable appetite for pinnipeds.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Less fishing will certainly mean less money is being passed around. This is called "Business" you Libs. Back in the 80's the "Northern Calif association of River Guides"
did a study, they found that every Steelhead a client brought to the boat put about $500 into the local economy. Think about it Nature has a way of taking care of herself! Maybe the planet needs fewer Killer Whales? What about the local Businesses that reline on the sport and commercial fisherfolks. Double the cost of a Calif. Fishing License, take the increase put the money in "ONLY" funds that build or improve Salmon Hatcheries. Pipe dream right!

  15. So "whalehugger" is offensive. We must watch our Ps and Qs so we don't offend the legislators. Yet the people behind anti fishing and hunting movements can call us whatever they like and it's acceptable. Terms such as "murderer" and "bloodthirsty killer" have been applied not only to me personally but to hunters and fishermen in general. And this is acceptable, mostly in todays liberal media. While I find the science behind the orca findings sound, I do not believe that such a proficient killer such as the orca would limit itself to a specific diet of only ONE species. That's like saying a mountain lion will ONLY eat deer, and absolutely nothing else. I simply believe the easiest, most cost efficient solution for the state is to close the fishery. There is no way the state is going to put money into fighting something like this for the benefit of fishermen.

  18. If they close in salmon season it would be a tragedy and hundreds of thousands of dollars would be lost the idea that you would stop it to save the Orca wouldn't work anyway so the idea is not feasible

  19. It's not fish and game anymore it's fish and wildlife that politically correct term cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars

  20. Willy -- yep, I think you're right that no salmon fishing in California would probably mean reduced hatchery production and ultimately fewer salmon for the orcas. It's obviously not a root-cause solution. Anyway, I don't think there's been talk yet (at least not publicly) of banning salmon fishing in California. Am I wrong? Is this being discussed?

  23. I think we've mayonnaised this whale. Everybody that hasn't already, check out all systems on your boat. And be sure to start your motor so you're not the guy plugging up the ramp with a boat that won't start @ dark thirty on the opener! The weather might lay down by the 13th but don't count on it. I was out there yesterday and it was "BIG" And for you guys driving over from the Sac area use your head there's no fish worth dying for. ab fish wants you all to stay home any way!

  24. People who 1) hate liberals, 2) hate Democrats, 3) hate "enviros" AND 4) love catching salmon must face some heavy cognitive dissonance when they step into the voting booth.

Ab fish, Tomales Outlaw, Tailout--do you think this guy would help destroy dams if you offered him a jack hammer? http://www.wernerfororegon.com/news-issues/2018/7/5/open-letter-to-deq-opposition-to-dam-removal-along-the-klamath-river

  26. Willy once commented in reference to me that no crab is worth dying for. Well my auntie herd him and straightened him out real quick. Remember that willy? When I was done with my boat, I gave it to the landing since they liked it so much.

  27. Alstair I bet you didn't put 3 in the box yesterday like we did out off Moss Landing. Maybe he was busy doing a little research on a place called White Water or Vince Foster, cause I'm sure he was still in huggies back then. No I dont have any regret of who I voted for and I wont feel bad when Trump goes down after he is out of office. We all know every politician is crooked. Some people just cant realize that we are all mortals and a make mistakes but I believe having Trump in office saved our nation from its continued path towards a welfare state, how many terrorist acts have happened on our soil during this administration. I am a firm believer that 911 was planned while Clinton was in office. So your welcome that you can go to sleep at night and know you will still be speaking English when you wake up. Have you hugged a whale today?

  28. The sediment deposits behind the dam is not an issue, that soil should have been spread out over years of floods which made the fertile klamath river valley. Some one can make millions selling that sandy loam to weed and wine farmers. Failure is the only way to learn sometimes. Real men figure out a solution as fast as they can and move on. I say we make Amazon and Facebook pay to fix the river. I hope your taking notes for your next article dont believe everything you read.

  30. Read my post. I said absolutely nothing about hating anyone or anything, liberal democrat enviro or otherwise. I never offered anyone a jackhammer. I said I believed the science behind what is happening with the orca pod to be sound. I do. However, I have been personally attacked by admitted liberal enviro democrats, and have had them try to close legal hunting areas based on their opinion and emotion. I was attacked by them in the press, and personally at DFW commission hearings. I provided the commission with sound facts, not opinions, and guess what? The area is still open to hunting. Oh, and hiking, kayaking, salmon fishing, and any other authorized public use of the public land that non-hunters and anglers enjoy. My point was that this state (run by elected liberal democrat enviros) would rather simply close a fishery than spend the money required to find a more long term solution that benefits ALL involved and affected, including fishermen and women.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Tomales Outlaw, sorry if I unfairly lumped you with others.

Regarding you last comment, could you cite the examples of "liberal democrat enviros" closing a fishery in California? There is the recent commercial Dungeness settlement, which took three months off the season. Others? (Not denying it's true. Just trying to remember.)

  32. Liberals are the reason we cant dive for abalone. They let poachers in to California on a Visa to come poach our resources. Then close it down on us legitimate sportsman.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ab fish, that's a long thin stretch.

Are there concrete examples of what Tomales Outlaw referred to above?

  36. The state doesn’t care fish and wildlife don’t care take away our revenue as sportsman they’ll just raise takes for salmon most fish go over seas when was the last time you saw bodega salmon in the store. If you don’t catch it yourself you can’t get it. They’ll probably close the fishery and Newspme will have state boats catching the fish for extra revenue

    ReplyDelete
  37. So, I hear that Gage caught a halibut...

  38. I didn't think orcas were on the endangered species list, but we know the winter run king salmon numbers on the Sacramento river is around 500 fish the fall numbers are dwindling the steelhead are in trouble the silver salmon are almost gone in California. we all as fishermen play a role. It's not rocket science its nature. The orcas eat a lot more than just salmon. There's enough room for both species in the ocean. My guess is the orcas probably simply got sick and died. The salmon are endangered orcas aren't. You've got to say to yourself how many salmon do you need put a couple in the freezer let the rest do their thing. Go for the Albacore

    ReplyDelete
  39. Willy have you ever heard of anyone hooking up on a Sword offshore around her? I know there is a couple commercial boats that fish for them with nets out of Moss Landing. I would think that the possibility of one being around bodega exists.

  40. This reminds me of surf blogs, whenever the surf gets crappy everyone bickers. Bring on the salmon! I personally can't wait for the first time I hear my reel screaming. Even us 90 percenters catch a fish every now and again! Thank god for the law of averages. And dumb persistence.

And I say be brave, sign your posts with your boat name. Nice to get to know our fellow boaters.

  41. Yeah, I'd say Orcas should get their share of salmon before we do. If that makes me a lib-enviro-dem, thats cool. I'll gladly not be a crybaby and fish for other stuff, before drinking a bud in my trailer. Yes, because some of us 90%ers could be reasonable about issues bigger than ourselves, too.

  42. The local MLPA rollout was troubled by conflicts of interest and political influence that led to the backers' desired end. They even extended the promised 5 year review deadline to 10 years, and you're mistaken if you think anyone who's a liberal was happy with the process.

That said, we need marine reserves, and at this point I like to think we will always be able to fish where we can now, and that the existing reserves will stay there as fish-producing water. Someday I think will go diving in one of the reserves to see how big the fish are!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yep, nice job on that halibut, Gage. It figures that you would get the game going. I was thinking that the water might be a little too salty and it's still a little early. Guess not.

Since the salmon won't be showing up for a few more weeks, I'm thinking butt.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I’m not a marine biologist, but I call BS on these whales starving up north. And the WHALEHUGGERS hugging them...
This is the 5th time they have been spotted down in Monterey.
    The 1st time 2000
    2nd time 2yrs later 2002
    3rd time 6yrs later 2008
    4th time 3yrs later 2011
    5th time 8yrs later 2019
Marine mammals “whales” adapt and migrate which can even mean traveling distances in our oceans sometimes for search of food other time just to migrate. Not sure their reason this year but it seems like there’s a pattern here and wether there’s need for concern I can’t tell you. It looks to me, these whales are just doing there thing, just like they have for almost 20 years...
I would say that if they stick around or came back a few years in a row, then we should be concerned. The whales will leave and be back when the decide they want to or need to.
    So
Let us fish and fix our rivers so the salmon can spawn and let whales be whales.
