Nick Bauer caught two halibut on the bar while jigging with Zach Liddle on Thursday. Conditions were a little spooky with thick fog and almost-breaking waves making this location probably not my first recommendation, but Nick and Zach made it work and made it home safe. I found a 12 pound halibut further in the bay, right across from the Landing. Mine bit a frozen anchovy. I also caught a keeper salmon at Abbott's and lost two other salmon. It was hard to find the feeding birds (if there were any) in the thick fog, so it was literally blind trolling. They're still there, though. My prediction is that the salmon bite will go off, wide open, on Thursday. (Wednesday is the last day) Dungeness opens on Saturday at 12:01 AM , which also means that crab traps can't go into the water until 12:01 AM Saturday. You can still crab for reds but with snares and ring nets only. Everybody change your cottons. You have been warned. Not my fault if your pot opens up and you spill your crab. Commercial crabbers change their cottons twice a season. You should probably do it at least once. While you're at it, make sure your GOID number is still legible on your buoy. Fish and Game will.

  3. i was using a 7"swim bait with 3oz jig head in 80' of water by ft. ross and hooked on something for 3 hours i could never pull off the bottom. 20 pound test, i learned my lesson. Can it be anything else then a ray. I havent heard of rays eating swim baits or on rocky bottoms. any ideas what i could of been fighting?

  4. Rockfish will swim for cover under rocks if you give them enough time. I’ve had some small ones do it that you would swear u got snagged on a sea bottom. After finally winning the tug a war I’ve had some tiny rockfish on the line. Just my experience, maybe others will chime in with similar experiences.

  5. Assuming it wasn't the bottom (no offense, but I've wasted more time than I care to admit while fighting a fish that was the bottom) then perhaps a bat ray, big skate, Pacific halibut or the queen of lings. Sharks generally need to keep moving but are also a possibility.

    1. i am an experienced fisherman. no offense taken. i was with a friend we switched off. it stayed in a 50 foot radius. we trailed it. thought we traveled far but after looked on the gps. i saw it flapping on the fish finder. farthest i got it off the bottom was 10 feet. it would fight so hard back down. after 3 hours we tightened the drag all the way and line snapped. it seemed like i would never get it up on 20 pound mono.

    2. May I suggest to Chris probst that do not use 20# test in the ocean nor the bay, I use minimum 30# leader and at times I wish I used heavier that way you can increase your drag leverage... obviously you know what kinds of fish are around and it will increase your odds of bigger catches, just sayin

  6. Sturgeon? thresher ?

Willy is it the law to replace cottons or your recommendation?

(Not to suggest that your recommendations should not be taken as law.)

  7. I tell my kids that my words are law. But the cotton thing is just a good idea. You gotta have the cotton (law) so it should be good cotton (recommendation).

  8. The bouy forecast looks bad to marginal Wednesday for last chance salmon.  Windy.com looks good though. What do you think?

  9. I think it may be doable for a partial day as the forecast stands now. That said, if you had a better reason to do something else (work? Paint your house?) you'd probably be better off doing that. Today's report from the water didn't get my blood boiling. My limited report sounded slooooow.

  10. Agree thumbs, although I use 25# line and leader, also have my drag on the light side.....takes me a little longer to bring them in but I thoroughly enjoy the catching part.
