California halibut season is year-round. Catching (here) starts in May, usually, and runs through October, with July through September usually being the best time. Jacksmelt do make good bait but these were a bit too large for a halibut to take it properly. They would try but just not get hooked. A few years back I missed five halibut bites (caught one) because my bait was almost this big. It can work but it is usually frustrating.

ReplyDeleteIt open now, but they don't start getting into the bay until the water gets warmer, I have caught some in July through sept, Willy would know more.
