The commercial boats started dropping pots this morning at 6:00 AM and by 9:00 AM they are already commenting on the radio about how hard it is to find a patch of water free of other gear. The rest of the ocean now looks like the outer bay with buoys everywhere. There will still be crab to catch on Ten Mile but it will probably be better in the outer bay, at least for a little while. The pier has had only a few Dungeness a day but boaters on the bay are catching partial to full limits when they find the right spot. Rockfishing is good with a lot of lingcod in the shallows. There's still a big pile of squid in 100' of water just south of the Trees.

  1. This why I have many times said there need to be pot limits, depth restrictions on communist crabbers. I feed my friends and family you feed safeway and your pocket books There is no need for 100 ft steel ships to be crabbing inside of 100ft. of water. Just think how good sport guys would have it if them bastards left some for us but no they have to mop up the ocean floor before somebody else.

  2. Pot limits they got. 500 pots seems like a lot (heck, it is a lot) but it is a lot less than what some of the big boats were running in the past. They'd argue as well that we get to keep smaller crabs and start earlier. I, for one, appreciate the early start. Who wants to go catch 5.75" Dungeness when there's 8" ones? But it is nice later in the season to have a reasonable shot at catching a few keepers in the .5" slot we have over the commercials.

    1. Do you buy your crab at Safeway. I just don't appreciate the commercialization of my resources. Besides 25% of our harvest will be exports to China. WTF

  11. I know my pots have been raided in the past. But the last time I dropped was early January, just before dusk. next morning my pots where no where to be seen. 3 new pots w/all new gear. $600 + worth. No ethics of the sea here.
