Here's a couple of pictures from Brad White.  I know that I asked for them, but I'm still jealous. The salmon is from the 16th and the sea bass is from Sunday. With the salmon scheduled to start winding down, maybe sea bass should start being a target. I figure that I can get skunked on them just as quickly as I get skunked on salmon.

  1. Yo Willy!

How long do you think the salmon will stick around?

  2. There will probably be salmon around for another month but the numbers will definitely drop as we go through the month. Duxbury reef will be good in October but you'll be lucky to get bit north of Point Reyes by then. The mouth of the Russian River may hold a few fish as well but the good spot is an MPA now. If you still need some salmon in the freezer, don't wait or you'll have to fish the river.

  3. What doesn't make sense you can't keep salmon in the Russian river due to extremely low numbers but you can fish in the ocean in front of the river for the salmon waitng for the mouth to open on the river For those of us without boats it's a bit frustrating dfg has rules on everything else

  4. Hey WIllie,

I have a question, if I leave a minnow trap out over night in the eel grass around hog island and or across from it by the beaches, would i get any shiner perch?

  5. You can't fish in front of the Russian bud.... Boat or not. It's an MPA as Willy said. A marine protection area. You can only fish so shallow in front of the Russian. It's not as easy as you think. It's frustrating for us boaters as well. DFG has plenty of rules to protect salmon waiting to go up river. Closed zones are only growing.

Look up MPAs for the bodega area. The river, the head, Pt Reyes and I think salmon creek all have some closed area to fishing.

  6. I've left minnow traps all over the bay. I've caught very few shiners in them. Lots of other interesting things, but few shiners. Most minnow trap openings are too narrow for shiners. I've modified mine but still have better luck getting baitfish on a sabiki.

  7. Willy,

First year out in the ocean for me. When you say that one will be lucky to get north of Point Reyes, is that due to weather?

    Thanks.

  9. Hey Outlaw,

Is there any place by Nick's cove you can fish with a sabiki for shiners? Like by the public launch area? Do shiners mostly hang around rock piles and pilings? Just trying to figure out where to go when I run out of shiners and I am out near hog island and don't want to run all the way back to Lawson's.

  11. Zebco Kid,
The salmon just get scarce up this way by the end of September. It's possible to catch salmon in October but you really have to work hard for maybe a bite. The weather is usually great.

  12. Scott, you can catch shiners and jacksmelt near the eelgrass beds, especially if you chum.
