These three fellows caught their limits (plus one for the captain's table) while fishing with Captain Larry Varela on the Rodbender. The big one went 32 pounds. They were mooching off of the very north end of McClure's beach drifting from 90 to 70 feet of water and left with the fish still biting. Another boat had eight salmon just south of the Trees. Other people did well today but there weren't as many good salmon stories as yesterday. The bar held a few more halibut today, and one boat returned from there with four. Three stripers to 20 pounds were taken in the surf yesterday on shrimp and sand crab baits.
Thanks for sharing on this awesome information with us for sure your idea is working best for me.

Any of you old salts ever mooch with squid on the hook?
ReplyDeleteIntentionally? Yes, it can work, but remember that your squid is competing against 150 million others out there. It has already worked for some guys, and it is worth a try, but bring some anchovies or herring just in case. Also, you might catch a white sea bass.
ReplyDeleteHow would a guy rig a squid for mooching? Thread with a needle?
ReplyDeleteI like two hooks in my calamari, but salmon mooching requires that the hooks be hard tied no further than 5 inches from top eye to bottom bend. A small squid would work like that, but I like a hook in the head and one in the body, near the tail. I would rig them tail toward the rod. One option with one hook is to put the hook in the head and a split ring or bead tied to the line about six or seven inches up from the hook (depending on the squid)and thread the squid on the leader, letting the bead or ring support the body from the inside. Not fishing for salmon, I'm a treble hook junkie.
ReplyDeleteThank You Sir. See you next time in your fine establishment. I'll be the guy in the Montauk. Well, one of the Montauks.

Fishing reports used to be the sole domain of local papers and sporting goods shops. A lot has changed since entering the internet age. Now it seems that fishing reports are everywhere, and where to find the information is no longer an issue.
