Salmon season will open here on April 4 with a limit of two per day, four in possession, and a 24" minimum size. After April there will likely be different regulations, but there won't be a decision on that until April 17. If history is any indicator the fish will be out deep, but other signs like warm water and continued squid spawning would seem to suggest that there may be some near shore fish. Today the beach had squid egg sacs scattered all over, so the spawning is definitely happening. If you come for the salmon but the wind is blowing (and really, what are the chances of that?) the surfperch are biting, at least. Also, I heard that some scuba divers speared three halibut by Hog Island this weekend. That would be three more than normal for this time of year but the water is not normal, so who knows? Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, I was told.

Hi Willey,

Anything new coming out of the bay, I know its early but was thinking of doing a halibut run. Can I get any shiner perch off the pier? I know its early, but like you said its not a normal season, the "butts" broke out early in the sfo bay.

No word on halibut in the bay. There are a few shiners off the pier already, but there's more along the weed beds further in the bay. It's early but very possible.

I am Interested in taking my handicapped aunt out to the pier for her 50th birthday this week. Is it easily accesible? Are the crab hitting snares from the pier? If not crabbing what would you recommend?

The pier has a ramp but the road is sandy right in front of the pier, so it's accessible but not necessarily easily. Our local paraplegic resident gets himself on and off the pier pretty well, but he gets around better than I do, I think. The crabbing is slow but they're still catching a few from the pier using traps and snares. The only other action is the jacksmelt which can be caught when a school goes by and they fight well for their size.

Thanks for the info. What's the best times out there for crabbing? What kind of set up should we bring for fishing as a back up plan?

Anyone coming out this weekend should take great care on the water. High winds and a large swell are forecast. Please be careful out there and wear your PFD!!
